We are excited to help you potentially transact in the carbon market. We work through Truterra LLC, a division of Land O’ Lakes. By working with Windy Ridge Ag we will be your data manager and help you have a seamless and smooth process. We take out all the guess work and keep it simple with you (the farmer) at the front of our mind.
Here is a checklist of items that you will need to begin collecting. To qualify you need to have made a practice change in the crop years 2017-2021. This means making a change from conventional till to a reduced/no-till situation OR adding cover crops to your operation.
A list of fields and boundaries with field ownership (do you own all of the fields you are submitting?)
Production records with yields, plant date, harvest date
Tillage pass dates (if applicable)
Cover crop fields (if applicable)
Fertilizer information (manure, commercial, etc?)
Crop rotation history
3 years of baseline data – (Meaning, if you submit for a 5 year practice change we need 8 total years of data)
You will be paid in FULL upon completion of verification. This process usually takes 10 months total with less than 5 hours of work required from you as the farmer. This is a 1 time payment. You will also be subject to paying Windy Ridge Ag LLC a data management fee of 10% of the total contract price. This fee is for all of the communications with Truterra, entering your information by hand into a web based application, and creating a verification sheet should you get verified. You will also likely get soil samples taken which Windy Ridge Ag will handle and facilitate only notifying you when this occurs. There is no cost for soil sampling. These samples consist of 2 tests, bulk density and soil organic carbon.
Windy Ridge Ag data management contract will be available once we meet to discuss the data process and program. You will sign and contract with Truterra. They will provide the 1 time payment. Truterra contract example will come in January of 2022. The Truterra contract is 5 years long with a 3 year opt out. This means that you will report your data for up to 5 years. This does not mean you will be financially liable should you opt out early. This is highly regarded as one of the most farmer friendly contracts on the market.
